Arthritis, back pain, osteoporosis and trauma are the most common cause of severe long-term pain and physical disability worldwide affecting hundreds of millions of people. Obviously, excess weight and physical inactivity are to blame, but dietary patterns should also be considered.

Arthritis is an illness of the joints, mostly affecting the elderly (osteoarthritis or degenerative arthritis). However, a subgroup of younger patients can also develop a severe form of arthritis, called rheumatoid arthritis where autoimmune antibodies play a major role. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease resulting in swelling, stiffness, pain, limited range of motion, joint deformity and disability.
The Western diet, characterized by an overconsumption of refined sugars, salt, and saturated fat, tend to be low in omega-3 fatty acid, vitamins and minerals. That kind of food pattern can lead to excessive weight gain, nutritional deficiencies, and negatively impact immunity. Several studies have shown how a deficiency in only one micronutrient can negatively impact immune functions and could therefore influence inflammatory arthritic conditions:
- Vitamin D plays a regulatory role in immune response and can modulate inflammation
- Vitamin B6 is essential for the synthesis of amino acids, building blocks of proteins involved in immunity, such as cytokines and antibodies.
- Adequate Selenium and Zinc intake is essential for the activity of several enzymes involved the development and maintenance of immune system.
The majority of bone mass is ‘’manufactured’’ during adolescence and young adulthood, with almost 90% of the skeletal mass accumulating by age 18. Many factors influence bone mass increase during growth, including dietary factors, especially Calcium and Vitamin D intake. Indeed, inadequate Calcium intake during growth may increase the risk of childhood fractures and predispose certain individuals to a lower peak bone mass and increased risk of osteoporosis. Vitamin D deficiency results in abnormalities in Calcium and Phosphorus, and bone metabolism leading to bone health problems such as rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.
Apart from those micronutrients, others should be considered. Magnesium and Zinc, for example can also contribute to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.
